How to Get Rid of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease that causes swelling or inflammation of your gums. Gingivitis can cause your gums to become swollen and begin to bleed just by brushing the teeth, eating or just touching the gums. The condition is the preclude to periodontal disease, which is a disease of the tissues that surround the neck and root of the teeth. There is a way to get rid of gingivitis, but it has to done every day or it won’t help for long.

Instructions

  1. Use dental floss to clean between your teeth. You need to floss first so you loosen anything caught between your teeth. Use either dental floss, floss picks or floss wands. They are available in waxed, non-wax, flavored or unflavored.
  2. Brush your teeth. Brushing after you floss will help to get rid of anything loosened between your teeth. Rmember to brush along the gum line, up, down and across your teeth because plaque can get set up at the gum line, not just between the teeth.
  3. Scrape your tongue with a tongue scrapper or the back of your toothbrush. Scrape back to front several times. This will help to remove any bacteria on your tongue, which can contribute to bad breath and plaque buildup.
  4. Make a paste with baking soda and peroxide. Apply this paste to your gums, gently massaging it in. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse with water.
  5. Rinse with mouthwash. There are many brands and flavors of mouthwash. Find one that can help prevent gingivitis, and that helps reduce plaque buildup and kills oral bacteria. This, in turn, helps defeat and prevent bad breath.
  6. Visit your dentist. If your gums are puffy, red, swollen or bleeding, you need to see your dentist. Getting a professional tooth cleaning will help remove the plaque and tartar that cause gingivitis and can prevent the gingivitis from progressing to periodontal disease.

Tips & Warnings

  1. The main reason a person develops gingivitis is because of plaque buildup between the teeth. If ignored, this plaque becomes tartar and your dentist will need to help you get rid of it.
  2. Eating and drinking less sugary foods will help keep plaque and tartar away. Scraping the inside of your teeth when you scrape your tongue also helps to get rid of bacteria.
  3. Taking vitamin C can help stop the bleeding of the gums, but it will not cure your gingivitis.
  4. If you smoke, you need to stop. If you won’t stop smoking, then you need to make sure not to smoke when your gums are inflamed. Tobacco can cause cancer of the mouth and sores in your mouth and on your gums.
  5. One of the signs of early gingivitis is when your gums change color from pink to dark red.

Low carb Paleo diet burns fat fast for weight loss, says ‘Eat the Yolks’ author

If you’ve banned high fat foods such as egg yolks, butter and beef from your diet and can’t lose weight, a nutritional therapy practitioner (NTP) says she knows the reason: You’re missing out on the fat-burning benefits of healthy fats. In an exclusive interview on Feb. 25, we talked with Liz Wolfe, NTP, about what she’s discovered when it comes to permanent weight loss and health.

Why the epidemic of obesity in our nation? Liz links it to “decades of the Standard American Diet, which leads to hormonal imbalance and out-of-control hunger.”

She’s convinced that our tendency to avoid fat is a large part of the problem. Our hormones need fats such as butter, beef and eggs, says Liz. And her new book’s title sums up her philosophy: “Eat the Yolks: Discover Paleo, fight food lies, and reclaim your health” (click for details).

Modern science proves that we need both fat and cholesterol, and “fat and cholesterol from ethically raised animal products, along with the fat-soluble vitamins that come with them, are vital to our health,” Liz told us.

And when it comes to the ideal diet for weight loss and health, Liz is a Paleo plan proponent. However, she does modify the traditional Paleo approach slightly by adding certain types of dairy.

“Paleo opens the door to a world of nourishing, delicious, appetite-regulating foods that many of us eliminated out of fear or simply forgot as a result of our standard diet rut,” she explains.

In contrast, “the standard American diet is based on restricting calories, restricting fat, eliminating fats and cholesterol from properly raised animals, and ignoring real food in favor of the profitable, nutrient-poor products we’re sold as if a so-called “whole grain” with a long ingredients label was somehow a true health food.”

Liz offers this insight on the benefits of whole grains: “That’s propaganda, pure and simple.”

So what really works for weight loss? To become what Liz calls an “efficient fat-burner,” dish up “healthy fats and cholesterol, properly-raised animals and the fat-soluble vitamins that come with them, and whole vegetables and fruits of all kinds. ”

A typical day in Liz’s own “Eat the Yolks” diet includes:

A ginger-lemon tea or glass of beet kvass.
Breakfast is eggs from our free-range flock, over sweet potato or taro root with a dollop of goat cheese or butter from grass-fed cows.
Lunch is quick: wild-caught sardines straight from the can – a fantastic, budget-conscious, low-food-chain source of Omega 3, calcium and protein – with leftover sautéed rainbow chard and other veggies, like roasted carrots or beets left over from dinner the night before.
Dinner might be soup or stew, made with homemade broth in the pressure cooker (another time-saver), or tomato sauce with ground beef over spaghetti squash, a favorite ten-minute meal.

For those who are vegetarians, Liz suggests modifying the traditional approach by incorporating “the right types of dairy products, eggs, and bivalve seafood like oysters.”

Liz feels that “eliminating processed grain products and packaged foods is 95% of the battle for most of us; from there, it’s simply tweaking to achieve our goals while paying close attention to how we feel.”

How to Treat Infected Mosquito Bites

Summer and mosquitoes go hand in hand with the heat of the season. They fly thick near water between dusk and dawn. The female needs blood for her eggs to survive, and usually we are the unfortunate targets for her meal. Mosquitoes carry blood-borne diseases such as dengue fever, yellow fever, malaria, encephalitis and West Nile virus, so a good mosquito repellent containing DEET should be sprayed on exposed skin before venturing out in the early morning or evening hours when these pesky critters feed. Often a mosquito bite may become so bothersome that we scratch it, and unconsciously scratch it in our sleep, until it becomes infected. Infected mosquito bites needed to be treated immediately.

Instructions

  1. Treating Infected Mosquito Bites – Wash the red, sometimes weeping, mosquito bite carefully with soap and water and dab it dry with a clean paper towel. Although you may have a compelling urge to scratch the infected mosquito bite like mad, try not to as fingernails harbor all kinds of bacteria and may cause a secondary infection.
  2. Apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin to the infected mosquito bite and cover with a band aid to prevent knocking the already painful area.
  3. Take an antihistamine such as Benadryl to quell the itching and reduce redness or welts, especially at night when unconscious scratching of the infected mosquito bite may occur. Caladryl may be applied after the infection has begun to heal to relieve the itch and reduce the swelling.

Bathroom Remodeling Made Easy

Ok, you have made the decision: Your bathroom is in need of a face lift! The next question is “Where Do I Start”? This very simple question creates the basis for your project.

This article provides a “road map” to help you make sure your bathroom remodel is a success. By careful planning, you will save money, time and (more importantly) grief and frustration. The following issues should be determined before hiring a contractor. This way (if you are getting multiple estimates) you will have “apples for apples” estimates as each contractor will know exactly what they are bidding on.

There are numerous decisions to be made when remodeling your bathroom. These decisions will not only determine the cost of the project, but will have direct a impact on the success (or failure) of the final product. It is crucial that you spend sufficient time addressing theses issues prior to commencing work. As with any home renovation, the key is in the planning.

One of the best ways to begin planning is to draw up a simple floor plan of the bathroom space, including the size of each wall. From here, you can begin to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Here are some basic questions you need to ask yourself:

o What is your proposed budget? If you can answer this question first, the material selection process will be much easier. Case in point: Tile (material only) is priced anywhere from $1.50 to $30.00 per square foot! Considering an average tub enclosure is around 80 sq.ft., just the price difference in tile selection can change the cost of the project by thousands of dollars.
o Are you keeping the same configuration of the bathroom as the existing layout? When moving walls or changing the layout requires framing, electrical, plumbing and drywall work. Replacing existing components (without relocation) is the most cost effective way to remodel your bathroom.
o Tub or Shower: Are you replacing the tub? Or are you converting the tub into a shower? When converting a tub into a shower, additional costs incurred will be in re-locating the plumbing drain, shower valve, building and sealing the shower pan among other things.
o Shower or Tub Enclosure: Do you want a tile or fiberglass enclosure? If it is a shower; do you want a fiberglass shower pan or tile. Prefab fiberglass units are (of course) more cost effective than tile however tile is much more aesthetically appealing.
o Tile Selection: Stone, tile (ceramic or porcelain), marble? Same tile for floor and enclosure? Any decorative tile additions? Shampoo nooks? Shower seat? Material and color choices are almost as infinite as the price points.
o Floor Covering: Using same material as tub/shower enclosure? Wood or tile base board? Wood base is more cost effective, however tile has a much classier look.
o Wall Covering: Paint, wallpaper, tile or a combination?
o Vanity Cabinet: Type of wood? Painted or stained? Low profile (31 1/2″ height) or regular (34 1/2″ height)? Master baths usually have the 34 1/2″ height while hallway or secondary bathrooms typically use the low profile cabinets.
o Vanity Top: Granite, tile, prefab unit?
o Sink: Surface mount or undermount?
o Toilet: Round or elongated? White or special color? Prices change dramatically for “designer” toilets and even the color choice can change the cost for the fixture.
o Lighting: Wall mount or recessed lighting? Re-locating lighting (requiring electrical and drywall work)? Installing or replacing exhaust fan? Keeping fixtures in the same location will (of course) save you money.
o Shower or Tub Door: Same configuration as existing (sliding or hinged)? Again, choices of doors “run the gamut” with regard to pricing.
o Replacing a Window? Retrofit or standard replacement (standard window replacement involves stucco/siding and drywall repair)?
o Bathroom Door: Replacing the existing bathroom door? Same style? Paint or stained? Hollow core or solid core? Pre-hung or replace door use existing door jamb?
o Hardware: Style and finishes for shower door, vanity cabinet knobs, sink faucet, towel bars? Pricing for fixtures changes dramatically when it comes to design and material choices.

Below are some basic space guidelines provided by the National Kitchen and Bath Association:

Lavatory

o 15″ (38 cm) or more of clearance space from the centerline of lavatory bowl to a wall or similar obstruction.
o 30″ (76 cm) or more of clearance space between the centerlines of double-bowl lavatories.
o At least 30″ x 48″ (76 cm x 122 cm) of clear floor space in front of the lavatory.
Toilet / Bidet
o 16″ (41 cm) from the centerline of a water closet or bidet to a wall or similar obstruction, or fixture adjacent to it.
o At least 48″ x 48″ (122 cm x 122 cm) of clear floor space in front of the water closet or bidet.

Bathtub / Shower

o Shower size large enough to comfortably use, at least 34″ x 34″ (86.36 cm x 86.36 cm).
o Tub size large enough to comfortably use.
o At least 60″ x 30″ (152 cm x 76 cm) of clear floor space in front of shower/tub.
General Information
o The bathroom entrance door swings so that it does not interfere with people in front of fixtures.
o Fixtures located so that more than two people can use the space comfortably.
o Water closet and bidet in separate compartments or shielded from entrance view.

o Non-slip flooring used throughout the space.

o Bathroom linen and paper product storage space provided.
o Storage space for shampoo and such in the shower/tub area, between 15″ to 48″ (38 cm – 122 cm) above the floor.

o Bathroom heating system will keep the space comfortably warm.
o Task lighting provided at every functional area.

In closing, remodeling your bathroom is an exciting endeavor and one (with proper planning) which can provide you and your family with years of enjoyment; not to mention improving the value and re-sale potential of your home.
